Heterosexual assumption regardin hiv transmission in africa
However, the level of HIV seroconcordance is largely unknown among heterosexual couples in sub-Saharan Africa. We aimed to quantify the population level HIV seroconcordance in stable heterosexual couples in rural South Africa. We calculated the proportions of HIV seroconcordance and serodiscordance in stable sexual partnerships and compared them to the expected proportions under the assumption of random mixing using individual-based microsimulation models. Among unpartnered individuals, we estimated the incidence rates and hazard of sexual partnership formation with HIV-positive or HIV-negative partners by participants' own time-varying HIV status. Competing risks survival regressions were fitted adjusting for sociodemographic and clinical factors.

This chapter posits that HIV prevention interventions in developing countries can reduce the incidence of HIV infection and sometimes save financial resources in the process. It also provides an overview of the basic theory underlying cost-effectiveness analysis. Although the chapter focuses on prevention, treatment and research are also indispensable to addressing the epidemic; these three tracks must be viewed as inseparable components of the overall response to the AIDS pandemic. Despite the widely acknowledged severity of the global HIV crisis, resources available to combat the epidemic are severely limited. By increasing the likelihood that new funds will be spent efficiently, cost-effectiveness analyses may also strengthen the political will to commit these funds. Cost-effectiveness analysis can guide the policy process in several specific ways. First, because it is ultimately about choosing among alternatives, cost-effectiveness analysis requires a clear description of all relevant policy options.

African NGOs are conducting numerous HIV prevention programs with several at-risk populations, yet their efforts have only rarely been systematically documented. To address this gap in the literature, the authors surveyed one NGO in each of 29 African countries regarding their HIV prevention activities and populations served. This report provides details concerning HIV prevention activities across the continent and describes in detail innovative programs from Togo and South Africa. NGOs in the present sample operate with modest budgets and small staff sizes, yet conduct programs that reach large segments of their communities.
