Hide your love away

Not a Beatles fan at all, but here it is. Time just 2:11

The song was covered by Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell and Noel Gallagher. All three seem to find the "Hey!" part somewhat flummoxing. See which one you like best.

Swimming In Qualia

Music by Steve Jansen, visuals by Shoko Ise. Extract from a video installation (original length - 24:11) presented at Contemporary Art and Photography in Japan - 'STILL/ALIVE', Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, December 22.2007 - February 20.2008. Time 8 minutes.

More from Steve Jansen: "I don't worry about the demands of the music industry. In the 80's I made a record with Richard Barbieri under the name of The Dolphin Brothers, for Virgin Records. I sung all the songs and wrote all the lyrics and yet it was a far less rewarding experience than making 'slope', primarily because I wasn't being true to myself with the work. It wasn't the sort of music I wanted to be making (even though at the time I thought it was), but it's where the industry led me. I learnt my lesson. Now, I'm pleased to say, with the advancement of technology, that element of the industry is dying somewhat as new artists can find the means to record and release material without the bank-rolling of record labels whose only real concerns are making as much money as possible whilst leaving the artist with as little as possible. Such are the demands made by, what is essentially, a loan company."

Geir Jenssen aka Biosphere is one of my favorite electronic musicians. See website for bio, discography, and some mp3 downloads. His masterpiece is Substrata2, the 2CD edition of 2001, plus there are excellent collaborations with Pete Namlook ("Fires of Ork" 1 & 2) and Deathprod ("Nordheim Transformed"), as well as his own Shenzhou and Dropsonde etc. This video is from a live performance. Three at once by this experimental band founded in early '70s that later became quite popular with alternative pop crowd. These pieces are quite easy on the ears in comparison with their early work. First is Yashar (06:35) from 1983, then Sensoria (07:50) from 1984, and finally Slow boat to Tassos (06:17), an ambient masterpiece. Enjoy!

At the heart of it all

Title: "At the heart of it all", sometimes known as "Montecute". Music: Coil; camera: Derek Jarman; voice: Dame Judie Dench; lyrics: William Shakespeare. Time: 05:03

To me, fair Friend, you never can be old,
For as you were when first your eye I eyed
Such seems your beauty still. Three winters' cold
Have from the forests shook three summers' pride;

Three beauteous springs to yellow autumn turn'd
In process of the seasons have I seen,
Three April perfumes in three hot Junes burn'd,
Since first I saw you fresh, which yet are green.

Ah! yet doth beauty, like a dial-hand,
Steal from his figure, and no pace perceived;
So your sweet hue, which methinks still doth stand,
Hath motion, and mine eye may be deceived:

For fear of which, hear this, thou age unbred,—
Ere you were born, was beauty's summer dead.

Once upon a time...

And now something utterly serious, and just a little bit bizzare. I found this charming Japanese TV broadcast of Dancing Queen on YouTube, quite by chance, and was surprised to recall the lyrics - I was only 8 years old when I first heard it in 1976 and probably quite a few times in years after that. It's probably one of best pop songs ever writen. The video is low quality, but they still sound and look great. The Japanese subtitles are simply too much fun...
